Musings of a Creative Slacker » wordpress

"Creative Slacker" referrs to the fact that I should be doing creative stuff - writing, art, 3D animation, RPG stuff, but I don't. Maybe "lazy bastard" would be more appropriate.

I’ve not been blogging lately – and my lately I apparently mean for over a year – because I was going to migrate the blog, so obviously I couldn’t add more posts because that would just mean I’d have to redo the backup. And then the migration process stalled and I got out of the habit.

I’ve been using Twitter quite a lot in the meantime (as you can see by my sidebar), but there are things that I can’t get into 140 characters. I’m especially thinking about my progress in learning Japanese. I’ve read a lot of advice that having a learning blog helps keep you honest and allows you to track your progress. Plus there are a lot of tools that I’m using and creating that I’d like to document as I go. So I think I shall resume blogging here.

The upgrade only had a two bits of terror, once when I discovered going to WordPress 3 broke my theme so badly I couldn’t get to the admin pages, and when I discovered my database server had too old a version of MySQL. Fortunately, I had a database backup and another server I could try. However, the database import failed, which I eventually worked out was because the backup was a .gz file in a .zip file – a compressed archive in a compressed archive. Naturally PHPMyAdmin threw a bit of a wobbly when I asked it to import that. Once I worked out that little issue, and added two likes of code to my theme, all was well.

I make no promises. But I can now at least blog if I choose!

I’ve decided I want to move my blog from Blogger.com to WordPress. I hosted the blog on my own site right from the start, just using Blogger as a blog editor and uploader. However, that meant giving Blogger control over certain aspects of my blog, and involved a third party every time I wanted to write a new post – not only did my site have to be up, but so did Blogger, and so did the connection between my site and Blogger. So moving the whole thing to something entirely hosted on my site was pretty much a no-brainer, except for the fact that it involved actual work. Which I suddenly decided to do, as is my way.

I still have a few things to work out, like putting my own image up in the corner there, but it looks like it works all in all, and it even keeps the old Blogger permalinks (because I know you all have every single one of my posts bookmarked so as to forever capture my deathless prose).
