So I found this slightly bedraggled mouse in my bathtub this morning, when I went for my morning wash. This would be the third mouse I’ve found there, and the second live one. I wonder if it’s something about the standing water that’s attracting them in? Anyway, as the mice are beginning to bug me, [...]
Brushes, an iPhone app, is a nice little painting app for the iPod Touch or iPhone (whichever flavour you have). I’ve been playing with it occasionally, generally when I’ve forgotten to bring a pen and paper along. My attempts to start with broad swathes of colour and then go gradually smaller and smaller have failed [...]
I harvested the final two of my planters today. The first one I did (the second one I planted – I think they’re “Red Duke of York”) had lots of potatoes with rather manky looking skin, round “sores” and some white flakes around the “sores”. I dubbed this “Spud Lurgie”. Some of the ones I [...]
To give the “I’m OK. The bull is dead.” version: Punch line: I’m fine. Some stuff got taken. Current status: My door has been fixed, and should be stronger than it was. The door frame has been replaced, and reinforced with metal. They took my graphics tablet (grr!), one of my monitors, a laptop, some [...]
I’ve taken delivery of a new desk, which means I now have enough space to bring my graphics tablet out of hiding. I’m hoping that this will mean I actually do some artwork occasionally… The old desk is going back into the spare room, to be my (theoretical) physical art station.
Well, as of this morning, I can write out the entire Kana chart from memory! This was done using Windows Journal on a Toshiba Tecra tablet PC, so it’s slightly rougher than even my usual scrawl, and I’ve sneakily not saved the grid pattern that made everything all neat and organised. We will call it [...]
My kana (Hiragana and Katakana) handwriting as of Wednesday 19th 2009. I have managed to swap ら and り (third column from the left, top two characters), and I’ve only written the Katakana (bottom group) that I know so far. These are charts of all the kana (well, minus the ones I don’t know), in [...]
? ? I have been teaching myself hiragana, one of the three Japanese scripts. I’m using Mnemosyne, a flash-card program that schedules cards cleverly so that the cards you remember well get scheduled less and less. I don’t remember learning to read English – as far as I am concerned, it’s as natural as breathing [...]
I am no longer a member of the Great Unwashed. I am now Gainfully Employed, or Sold Out To The Man, depending on your point of view. The Man in question is the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Glasgow, where I shall be helping keep their computers up and running. I shall be [...]
