I am no longer a member of the Great Unwashed. I am now Gainfully Employed, or Sold Out To The Man, depending on your point of view. The Man in question is the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Glasgow, where I shall be helping keep their computers up and running. I shall be learning about a wide variety of software and hardware, as well as to run away very fast should I hear a fire alarm, as the engineering buildings are full of Very Scary Things that do not react well to fire.
The main thing I need to get used to is all the walking I’m doing. It seems I’ve led a very sedentary lifestyle whilst I’ve been unemployed…

Be careful not to do this too well, or they will think they don’t really need you. Learn which members of staff will not see through you when you give a low whistle and scratch your head, implying that it’s a really tricky problem which requires your highly specialist knowledge. Just don’t let them see you when you just turn if off at the wall and turn it back on again.
