Using a combination of birthday money and the last of my casino night winnings, I’ve bought myself an extra Gigabyte of RAM and a new graphics card (an NVidia GeForce 6600, a whole one thousand better than my old GeForce 5600). The reason for the purchase was that I couldn’t play Half Life 2: Episode 1 because of all the graphical niceness. In fact, it would crash after the opening cinematic, rather than play.
Also, the old card had a habit of Going Very Wrong under stress (see here for an example of Rome: Total War under the influence), leaving lots of block-shaped holes in the 3D world. Very strange behaviour.
But no more! I can play HL2E1, World of Warcraft doesn’t cause the aforementioned meltdown, and I can actually ramp up all the graphic settings. It’s 3D goodness! Plus, my machine now has an almost sensible amount of RAM (1.5G), which will help with general performance.
And soon my vouchers from the work’s birthday plan will turn up in my inbox, and I can go waste money on Amazon!

Happy Birthday

When did you start going to Casinos?
‘Twas a Work Night Out. We went to this really nice Indian Restaurant, and after dinner had some casino games set up in the function suite. There was poker, blackjack and roulette, as I recall.
Anyhoo, we all got £50 in chips to start the evening, and the person with the most at the end won a £100 prize – and it was me! I was in fourth place – out of the prizes – until literally the last throw of the roulette wheel, when I put everything on black. It came up, so I doubled my money, and catapulted myself into the lead!
Evidently I forgot to blog about this, though
