Saw The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with some of The Crowd yesterday – SixFootHobbit, AgentGray, ChocolateMuffin, and LaidBackGuy. I’d not heard good things about the film, until a couple of days before we actually went, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
However, it turned out to be very good. It was actually taken from Douglas Adams’ own script, so really, why were we so worried? I do worry what people who haven’t heard the radio play or read the books will get from it – there’s a metric tonne of in-jokes and bits from the book that whip by with little or no explanation. There were also a couple of things I didn’t recognize that also whipped by with little or no explanation – I found myself wondering if they were put in so that us veterans also were confused from time to time…
Didn’t like Zaphod very much – very different, very American. Blah. Ford wasn’t given enough to do, nor enough to really put a stamp on the proceedings. But Arthur was fantastic, as was Trillian (she was also American, but cute enough to make up for it). And Stephen Fry as The Book – class.
And, most importantly, It Was Funny. Somewhat of an important factor, all in all…
The only downside was that afterwards I had a bad headache (the showing was slightly out of focus and jittery – you only noticed it when there was actual text on the screen, but it was there all the same), and I was just too tired to go to the DURPSDay celebrations afterwards.
