Yesterday, cycled to work for the first time! It was a nice, crisp early morning – in Dundee, it’s full daylight by 5am, let alone 6am, when I set off. And I took exactly the same amount of time as when I take the bus – got into work at 6:35. Of course, instead of having breakfast and relaxing for the time before work like I can when I bus it, I spent most of that time having a quick wash and changing into work clothes, but that’s cool. A bit tired during work, and on occasion the actual task of rising from the chair was a bit of an effort, but mostly I felt pretty good.
Unfortunately, by the time I came to ride home, it was raining. And not just a summer shower, but bucketing down. That was fun. Having to keep quite a distance from the curb because the puddles in the gutter were about a metre wide and looked very wet. The worrying thought that the car drivers now can’t see me as well and take longer to brake. And, of course, the usual fun of just being very, very wet.
This morning I was actually a little late getting out of the door, and discovered a nice benefit to biking rather than busing – if I’m five minutes late leaving, I’m just five minutes late. If I’ve five minutes late with the bus, then I have to wait the 25 minutes or whatever that the next bus takes to arrive. So if I miss my bus, I’m late into work. I’ve got about 25 minutes of potential lateness with the bike (although I don’t want to do that, as it’d leave me no time to change before my shift starts). And that’s over and above it being better for me
It doesn’t currently cost me less, alas, as I’m on a monthly direct-debit bus pass, and I think I’m still in the minimum period.
I was a bit worried, as my cycling clothes from yesterday were still wet, meaning I had to go in emergency backup cycling clothes – i.e. jeans and tshirt – and if they got wet, well, I’d not have anything else to wear, basically… But no, it was nice and sunny. Quite pleasant. I even dropped by The Shop, and inflicted my smelly sweaty self upon them. Bought Reality Storm from The Shop, but dunno when I’ll get a chance to read it. Still haven’t had much of a chance to read through The Pact of Pasquine, and I’ve had that since the Nationals…
And now I’m back. And preparing for a weekend of packing. Such fun!
Ooh, just looked out of the window – and it’s started raining! Hah! In just in time!
Now all I have to do is decide if I’m playing Abberant, or actually doing some pre-packing…
